Too much water is the number one reason for problems with concrete. It leads to weaker concrete more prone to cracking. Too much water negatively affects compressive, tensile and flexural strengths, porosity, shrinkage and color.Most of the water used in concrete countertop mix designs is not necessary for hydration of the cement. It is simply “water of convenience” added to make the concrete workable – easy to mix and pour. But this water of convenience causes all of the problems listed above.The solution is to use a water reducer. The most powerful high-range water reducers are called superplasticizers. Alpha Pro Polymer is an extremely powerful polycarboxylate superplasticizer.- Dose as a percentage by weight of cementitious material (cement + pozzolan)- Suggested starting dose for fluid concrete: 0.375%, Use less just to gain workability, Max dose: 1.5%- Overdosing will lead to segregation (water separates and floats to the top, and the aggregates sink to the bottom), so make test batches to ensure optimum dosage for your concrete mix design
