The oldest surviving Samplers were constructed in the 15th and 16th centuries. Ladies who did needlework way back in history did not have the luxury of preprinted patterns. When a new pattern was shared, it was randomly sewn into a piece of cloth. This was a lady's "Sampler". By the 18th century, Samplers had evolved into a practice more structured, one that was more to show skill, rather than collect stitches. The stitching of Samplers was seen as a sign of virtue, achievement and industry, and girls were taught the skill at an early age. Our artisans pay tribute to the Sampler's history, with this sweet, delicately detailed, softly colored, wall tapestry. A beautiful symbol of a simpler time.
