You'll need to add some sort of liner to keep the dirt from running out the bottom and to offer a bit of protection to the wood. How much does it weigh with potting soil in it? I painted mine with some leftover chalk paint(outside only and about 2" inside). Looks lovely and held up well. I bought another one this year and painted it exactly the same way, and touched up the older one at the same time.
