Important Hint: Regarding your application load type, in case of induction loads like motor-based and transformer, please mind the inrush current of the load/motor during starting up should be less than the converter's output rated current. Clarification: When the motor starts to spin up, it pulls high inrush current that may reach 6 times its rated value and lasts from few milliseconds to 1-3 seconds unless the motor was attached to starting controller like soft starter or VFD. Also, some other loads have high inrush current like transformers, electronic amplifier (tube amplifier), a circuit board with several capacitors and the capacitor. Frequency Converter Sizing Guidelines 1. Motor Loads: 1). Direct-on-line (DOL) start: Motors draw 5–7× rated current at startup → Select a converter sized for 5–8× motor rating. 2). Using VFD or soft starter: Startup current is reduced to about 1.5–2× rated current → Converter output current must be at least 1.5–2× motor rated current. 2. Non-Motor Loads: Select a converter with ≥1.3× load power and ≥1.3× load current. *Rule of Thumb: The converter’s rated output current must always exceed the maximum inrush current of the connected load.
