ESPIRITISMO COMES TO AMERICA The American victory in the Spanish-American War made Puerto Rico a territory of the United States. In 1917, Puerto Ricans officially became United States citizens. This allowed them to travel back and forth to the mainland, and many of them, in fact, moved there. In the 1950s, due to the economic instability of the island, huge waves of Puerto Ricans moved to America, encouraged by both the U. S. and Puerto Rican governments, in hopes of improving their economic lives. And they brought Espiritismo with them.
