Product Features Extra Razor-Sharp Japanese Blue Steel No.2 The blade edge is made of top-quality Japanese carbon steel (Aogami Blue Steel #2) and hand sharpened by Japanese craftsmen. You can enjoy the sharpness and edge retention. *Blades need to be tuned before use. Japanese hammer GENNO (8-16 oz) or wooden mallet (36-55 mm) are recommended. Quality Laminated Structure The blade edge (Aogami Blue Steel #2) is laminated by soft iron. The layered construction of the two steel materials increases blade durability and improves sharpening ease. This is the traditional structure of the Japanese-style blade. Premium Red Oak Body The plane body (dai) is crafted from hard, durable Japanese red oak (Aka-gashi) and finished with a premium oil treatment for a smooth glide and superior longevity. This is KAKURI’s flagship model—recommended for users who demand the highest level of feel and performance. Setting the Iron Tap the head of the iron lightly with a hammer to advance it. Sight along the sole and set the cutting edge to project about the thickness of a hair. 2. Retracting the Iron Hold the iron and tap the rear corner of the body to retract an over-projecting edge. *Always hit the corner, not the flat face. 3. Lateral Adjustment Tap the left or right side of the iron lightly so the edge comes out straight and parallel to the sole. 4. Setting the Chipbreaker Tap the chipbreaker to ~0.05 mm (0.002 in) behind the edge of the iron. Check from above; a tight gap helps control tear-out. 5. Test Planing Take a few test strokes and fine-tune the projection and lateral setting as needed. Setup is complete. 6. Surface Finishing & Chamfering Set edge ~0.05 mm (thickness of a hair) for general work, ~0.03 mm for final passes. For chamfers, a compact one-hand plane (35mm and 42mm blade planes) works best. If you want to avoid marring the blade, consider a soft-metal adjusting hammer made of brass or pure copper. Sharpening the Blade With proper maintenance, your iron will deliver long service life even after it dulls. If you’re new to sharpening or prefer an easier method, use a dedicated sharpening guide/jig—it makes achieving a sharp, consistent edge simple, even for beginners.
