Common Clothes Moth Christian Name: Tineola Bisselliella Clothes moth infestations tend to be more evenly distributed between the three main species, though the common clothes moth is the most uncommon. We're kidding, it's actually the most common, as you may have guessed. These moths' larvae will tend to leave trails of webbing near where they've feasted, hence why their alternate name is the webbing clothes moth. Case-bearing Clothes Moth Christian Name: Tinea Pellionella These red-heads are bad news. They're easily identified by their dark spots, and are as likely to be found among carpets as they are clothes. Their larvae weave themselves a spiffy little cocoon based on whatever they've been chowing down on. Pale-backed Clothes Moth Christian Name: Monopis Crocicapitella So, based on the lack of imagination in naming the other two, we think you probably know why this little guy is called the pale-backed clothes moth. We prefer tuxedo moth or penguin moth, but we most prefer trapping the bloody things and pointing and laughing. Got an active infestation? The most important thing to understand here is that the things doing the flying ain’t the things doing the eating. Moths don’t eat anything: larvae do. The presence of multiple moths implies the presence of eggs and larvae. To end an infestation, you need to prevent moths from mating, eggs from hatching and larvae from feeding.
