You are the artist and your home is your canvas. It’s imperative that you understand the rules of decorating so that when you choose to break one, it’s on purpose and not because you have no idea about the fundamentals of good design. Break the rules so things can be better, not because you don’t know better. Rule #27: Add a temporary fix to the mix When circumstances don’t enable you to do what you want but also don’t allow you to wait for whatever is necessary to move forward, that means it’s time for a temporary fix. A temporary fix is anything that holds you over so a room serves you and looks better until you can do what you want or need to in the future. Rule #40: Hate the sofa, hate the space If you don’t love your sofa and are ready to make changes in the room where your sofa lives, I want to encourage you that if you do nothing else than find a way to get a sofa you love, your entire room will feel better. It’s the single most impactful decision you can make. When you hate your sofa, you’ll hate your space. When you hate your space, you won’t fully use it, and that’s a waste.
