Also, symmetry helps ground everything, so I like to have trees on either side of the room to add balance. Some years they have white lights and vintage garlands; other years they have bubble lights. A friend told me the ones with bubble lights look like Christmas chandeliers—and I think she’s right! Decorating the Dining Room It makes me a little sad that in many homes, dining rooms have fallen by the wayside. I grew up eating around the dining room table with my family, and at the holidays there were so many meaningful memories made there. I now have my grandmother’s dining room furniture, and it is where we have our meals every night. At one time or another, everyone in my family was seated around that same table in the same chairs for our holiday gatherings. It all brings me a great sense of comfort, connection, and continuity. Decorating the Kitchen and Bath The kitchen really is the heart of a home. Mine sees a lot of love and laughter, and my holiday decorating in this room reflects that joy. I have a large marble island in my kitchen that is flanked by windows. Each year I transform it into a merry focal point, adding holiday curtains made by my sister and much more. I also decorate the walls, cabinets, and side counters. It’s fun to see the same space looking so different from year to year. Decorating the Sitting Room, Bedroom, and Guest Room When people stay at my home over the holidays, you know darn well they are going to have a Christmas tree in their room! That said, while I think it’s important for visitors to have a tree, I also know they need space to unpack, read, relax, etc., so my decor here is small and minimal, but still meaningful. Deck the Halls; Windows, Doors, Outdoor Décor, and More I believe that decorating outside your home is really a gesture of love to the world. Since I’m not often out there looking at it, I really do think of it as sharing my holiday joy with everyone. My neighbors refer to me as “Christmas Bob,” and passersby always tell me how my decorations make them feel happy and nostalgic. I always use live trees I’ve decorated with large vintage light bulbs, and I add a large plywood Santa made long ago in someone’s workshop. I also add gifts, a sled, and often an elf or two for good measure. A Handmade Holiday; Crafting Memories The earliest Christmas ornaments and decorations were all handmade. From paper chains to fabric ornaments, these simple, heartful objects were paramount to celebrating the season in a humble, heartfelt way. I come from a very crafty family, and we always made ornaments and other decor for our home. I still have many of these items, and they are the ones I treasure most. Shopping, Gifting, Wrapping, and Entertaining Exchanging presents under the Christmas tree is one of the great crescendos of the holidays. Since it is, indeed, more blessed to give than to receive, I take great joy in finding gifts for my loved ones. Instead of seeing holiday shopping as a hassle, I’ve always made it a year-round part of my life. In my world of vintage venues, it’s important to buy something special when you see it—and since I primarily give vintage gifts, I shop all year long for them. Finding and Collecting Vintage Holiday Items One of my favorite mottos for collectors of vintage holiday items is “Buy Off Season and Save.” This means that just like Mom and I did after Christmas each year at our local department stores, I look for vintage holiday items after the season is over. Vintage Christmas ornaments, lights, and decor are most expensive from late October until late December. Afterward, dealers are more likely to discount prices. Pay It Forward; Passing Along Objects, Traditions, Recipes, and More When I decorate for the holidays, I’m keeping traditions and feelings alive. I do a great deal of it with the memory of those who showed me the way: Mom, Dad, my brother Johnny, my grandparents, my aunts and uncles . . . all of whom have physically left this world. Now it’s my job to share their wisdom and creative visions with everyone.
