Top Gun Volleyball design. Top Gun is a hugely successful 1986 American action film directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. The film stars Tom Cruise as Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a young trainee pilot aboard the aircraft USS Enterprise. Both he and his radar intercept officer Nick “Goose” Bradshaw are given the chance to train at the United States Navy’s Fighter Weapons School (also called Top Gun) at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California. The movie also stars Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer and Tom Skerritt. Initially the film struggled on release in theatres due to some mixed reviews from film critics, but increased showings and interest led to Top Gun becoming the highest-grossing domestic film of 1986 and highest-grossing film that year worldwide. The soundtrack to the movie (featuring 80s classics from Kenny Loggins, Berlin and Cheap Trick amongst others) also became massively popular, reaching a 9x platinum certification. The film has become an iconic part of 1980s cinematic history and has recently spawned a sequel, Top Gun Maverick which brought fans young and old back to the cinema.
