Ultrasonic waves cannot travel through air. A couplant is required to bridge the transducer and the material. While included, common alternatives like glycerin or light machine oil also work. How do I know if the device is accurate before I start testing? The LAT-US100 features a built-in calibration block on the face of the unit. Simply apply couplant to the block and use the CAL function to ensure the meter is reading perfectly before you begin your field inspection. Why am I getting a "0.00" or unstable reading on a pipe? This is usually due to poor contact or a surface that is too rough. Ensure the surface is cleaned of loose rust or scale, and use plenty of couplant. For curved pipe walls, ensure the transducer is held steady and perpendicular to the surface. Is the battery replaceable, or do I need to plug it in?
